The Shakers in Florida? Yes, it’s true. In the late nineteenth century, the Shakers established a small community, Olive Branch, in central Florida—very close to the area now known worldwide as Disneyworld. During its short lifespan (1896-1924), the community delved–with mixed success—into entirely new (to them) commercial crops such as pineapples, oranges, and bananas. The Florida community is just one example of the Shakers’ many efforts at the turn of the century to diversify investments and business opportunities in an effort to stay relevant and viable. Join interpreter John Parker for an evocative talk about this little-known community, the inspiration for Russell Banks’s 2022 novel The Magic Kingdom.
