SHAKING UP THE PATRIARCHY

Thursday, July 9, 5–8 pm (tentative)

Our twilight happy hour in the Trustees’ Office celebrates the centennial of the 19th Amendment—a step towards women’s equality that, for the Shakers, was simply everyday life in utopia. Pulling out hidden artifacts from our collection, we’ll discuss the Shaker female economy, a monetary powerhouse managed by Shaker sisters who kept the Hancock community afloat through the mid-twentieth century. Thematic libations based on recipes from Mary Whitcher’s Shaker House-Keeper (1882) will be mixed in the spirit of Shaker innovation and sisterhood.

MADE FOR MUDDLING

Thursday, August 13, 5–8 pm (tentative)

At this takeover of the gardens by Methuselah Bar & Lounge, Yuki Cohen, owner of the Pittsfield hotspot, will lead a mini mixology course with herbs handpicked from our garden. Our gardener Lauren Piotrowski will also be on hand with a tale or two about the Shakers’ innovative gardening practices. Mix it up with powerhouse singer Wanda Houston and guitarist Robert Putnam, and enjoy delicious food from Methuselah.
