DESCRIPTION:Blacksmithing 1-on-1 \nDATES: Saturday\, July 11 (Other 2026 dates:  May 9\, June 13\, August 8\, September 12\, October 10\, November 14) \nTIME:  10 am to 12 pm \nREGISTRATION FEE:  $150/$135 for members. Includes Village admission. \nMATERIALS FEE: $20 (cash only) payable directly to the instructor  \nLearn basic blacksmithing skills in a private lesson at the Village’s coal-fired forge. Working alongside one of the Village’s experienced blacksmiths\, learn to manage a coal forge fire; heat stock; form the stock using tools such as hammers and anvils; and complete finish work (which includes operating an electric grinder). No previous experience required. New participants will make two J hooks. Includes admission to the Village. \nMATERIALS FEE: $20 materials fee payable directly to the instructor on the day of the workshop. \nThis basket is plenty big enough for the trip to the farmer’s market or the garden. The basket measures 8”x 12”x 5 ½” deep with a sturdy oak handle. Woven in natural reed with many choices of color accents to make the basket uniquely yours. No experience needed. Suitable for ages 14 and up. \nINSTRUCTOR: A basket maker since 1995\, Sandy Salada weaves a variety of baskets\, including patterns of her own design\, patterns by other teachers\, and reproductions of cultural and historical baskets. Sandy teaches in her home studio as well as at Shaker Heritage Society in Watervliet\, New York\, and at Hancock Shaker Village. \n

Includes admission to the Village \nThis delightful wooden handled broom is a fun mid-size broom that has multiple uses. You will make a short handled broom with a finished smooth wooden handle and all natural broom corn. You will have your color choice of nylon string and a small bunch of either black or red broom corn to add a splash of color or mix into your broom.  \nIn this workshop you will learn how to hand tie your broom to the handle\, then how to sew the broom together. This broom is a very handy size for sweeping front porches and staircases and cleaning around furniture and hearths. Children love them\, too.
